Parents are encouraged to participate in the life of the school. Some parents volunteer to help in classes or listen to children read. Other parents get involved in community events and some are members of the parent association (PA). A school PA could be involved in organising social and supporting special school events such as the international day. The PA could organise some of the after school activities and clubs or even organise classes during the day for parents to attend such as art activities. Many parents like to be involved in running language clubs for their own nationality. Occasionally the PA could organise meetings in liaison with the principal to explain school issues or new initiatives. The wider the range of activities offered, the more people will be likely to become involved. Interested parents should arrange a general meeting at the start of the year in consultation with the school principal to decide the objectives of the committee. The PA should elect its own chairperson and find its own volunteers for the committee. The principal attends by invitation from the chairperson as required.
